Originally from Vancouver, Canada, my research lies in cultural studies related to Japan. The intersections between language and culture, media studies and global aspects of these fields are all areas of interest. I am one of the founding group of organizers for the World Cosplay Summit event and have been helping organize the event since 2003. In 2016 I was involved in bringing the Mechademia Academic Association’s Asia Conference to Japan and continue to play a role on the steering committee. Recent areas of study have been places where cosplay is conducted, including shotengai shopping areas and cosplay studios. Currently I am a lecturer at Kokushikan University.

バンクーバー・カナダ出身。研究の中心は文化論。言葉と文化の交わり、メディア論について国際的な見地からテーマを捉える。2003年より、世界コスプレサミットの創始メンバーの一人として現在も活動中。2016年からは世界的に有名なメカデミア学会の初の日本開催に尽舘力。現メカデミア学会運営委員の一人。メディア文化論、グローバルスタディーズ、学術論文と応用言語学などについて数々の大学で教鞭をとる。近年の研究分野としては、商店街やコスプレスタジオなど、コスプレが行われる場所を対象としてきました。国士舘大学で講師を務めている。

 

Recent publications have included ‘Cosplay Collaboration Videos: Community Interactivity in Times of Pandemic’(2024) and ‘Ambiguous Spaces: The Changeable Nature of Cosplay Studios in Japan’ (2024). Planned for publication next year is a book chapter examining Japanese Pilgrimage entitled 'Layers of Osu Kannon: Intersection of Religious and Popular Culture Pilgrimage through the Shotengai Shopping Area' (2026).

近年の主な出版物には、「Cosplay Collaboration Videos: Community Interactivity in Times of Pandemic（2024）」（コスプレ・コラボレーション動画：パンデミック時代におけるコミュニティ相互作用）や「Ambiguous Spaces: The Changeable Nature of Cosplay Studios in Japan （2024）」（変容する空間：日本におけるコスプレスタジオの可変的な性質）がある。来年刊行予定のものとしては、日本の巡礼を扱った書籍の一章 「Layers of Osu Kannon: Intersection of Religious and Popular Culture Pilgrimage through the Shotengai Shopping Area (2026)」（大須観音のレイヤー（層）：宗教的巡礼とポップカルチャー的巡礼が商店街を通じて交差する場所）がある。
